$750-900 gaming PC? Intel i5, r9 280x?

Solution
Sure. Priority in gaming is always 1) Graphics Card, 2) CPU. R9 280x is a good performing card, with 3GB (that most cards don't have) - and is great at the correct market price. So I have 2 builds, one overclocked that you can use to boost up your system - straightaway or when you need more juice down the road.
