Need help updating to a newer video card

I am currently running a EVGA GTX 260. World of Warcraft runs ok but I have to turn everything down to fair/low. Would like to get something a little newer that would at least let me run higher settings.

mobo: Asus M3A78-EM
processor: AMD Asus(tm) 7750 processor 2.7 Ghz Dual Core
4G ram
650w PSU

Any suggestions?

Your dual core is what's holding you back in WoW, not the 260. Any new card you buy won't see any improvements in WoW because your CPU is limiting your system's performance

As with most MMOs, WoW is a fairly CPU intensive game

For WoW, powerful single threaded performance would be ideal, so an i3 or i5 + new mobo would be a great upgrade (fairly pricey too)

For your motherboard the Phenom II X4 965 should be compatible after a bios update (not really recommended but it's still an option)

According to the page I linked you wouldn't need to flash your BIOS (which is a pretty risky thing to do) since your current version isn't newer than the one linked

If you ever consider going for an i3 and a new motherboard, a fresh install of Windows would be recommended for that

If I want to upgrade the mobo and processor what would I need to look for with my current video card? I wanted to originally build a new machine and keep this one as well so my husband and I can both play wow.

my gtx 260 (didn't know if there was a certain mobo i needed for it or not) It's been awhile since I built a computer (embarrassed)

Oh sorry I misinterpreted it then, all motherboards nowadays have PCI-E x16 slots so the 260 would work fine with any of them

Sorry forgot to mention, a new mobo would also need new ram (DDR3) whereas your current DDR2 ram would be incompatible

So I now have a ASUS Crosshair IV mobo and a AMD Phenom II X4 965, same video card GTX 260 with current driver. My game is running worse. I had zero lag with the older mobo and processor. Now my I glitch all over the place. I have everything turned down to low/fair. Now what?

My PSU is a 600 I thought it was a 650.

That's odd, the Phenom 965 is much more powerful than the old 7750. Are you running the latest Nvidia drivers? the latest drivers from Nvidia seem to be buggy for the most part, you could try to revert to an older driver such as 314.22

Aside from this (he's usually right), be sure you have all bios updates for the mobo as well as any misc missing drivers. The simplest stupid driver missing can cause issues. Check your Device Manager for anything missing a driver.

Which reminds me, if you changed your Mobo (your older one was compatible IIRC), a fresh install of your operating system is recommended as old chipset drivers will conflict with your current ones if you haven't already
