Hi all,
I have a D-Link 657 model wireless router. I'm running Windows 7 and my wife is running Mac OS. I use a wired connection, she uses wireless through a laptop (macbook pro). I also have a PS3 which is wired to the router. I have a cable modem through Time Warner Cable.
Problem: About once a day (sometimes once every few days), the router will stop transmitting a wireless signal. By this, I mean it will disconnect all wireless devices, and no wireless devices can reconnect until the router is rebooted. If my wife attempts to connect before it's rebooted, it will say "connection timeout error". Furthermore, our phones will not connect to the wireless. Importantly, all wired connections remain working (my PS3, my computer).
Attempted fixes: I've restored the router to factory defaults. I've updated the firmware, too. I've tried changing DHCP lease time to extreme values (either 1 year or 1 minute) - neither of which worked. I've tried adding in DHCP reservations for all devices. I've tried changing the type of wireless security (AEP, TKIP, WPA, WPA2). I've tried changing the channel width (20mhz, or auto 20/40mhz). I've tried selecting channel 6 vs. auto-selecting a channel. I've tried changing the wireless SSID name (to get rid of an underscore in the previous name). None of it resolved the issue.
Other issues: Occasionally, the device will still be working wirelessly, but my wife will have to randomly reconnect manually (i.e., it will not automatically sign her in, so she will have to randomly click the network icon from the drop-down menu).
I would like to repeat: The wired connections *always* work. I know it's a problem specifically with the wireless.
My thoughts: One thing that I noticed the other day is that the router has the wrong date / time (a year off). Perhaps requiring the router to connect to an NTP server (which updates the time) will resolve the issue?
Other potential fixes I'm considering: Use MAC filtering, remove DHCP server completely (not sure how to implement this, though), try to flash the router to another kind of firmware (WWRT or whatever it's called), set my DNS servers manually (e.g., google DNS), set up the main wireless device to the DMZ.
I would love to hear any suggestions on this problem. I'm considering buying a new router given all the trouble we've had with this one. Please help! It's much appreciated! I can also post screen shots of the admin page, although it is admittedly quite lengthy with lots of options.
