You have to use a Displayport cable, hdmi can't do 144hz.

You don't have to use a display port cable, that is one of the two options. The other choice would be DVI, which is more common and more easily accessible.

Might want to add that the DVI cable should be dual-link.

Check your DVI cable, if you aren't using a DVI-D or DVI-I dual link, you won't be able to get the full refresh rate.

Actually, a DVI-D wouldn't be good enough, it has to be a Dual Link DVI-D, or Dual Link DVI-I (though kind of pointless as it only works for digital signals).

But have you tried both DVI ports on your GPU? AMD cards don't support Dual Link on both ports.

Dual link was implied for both DVI-D / I

That was what I said. The way you wrote your first post, it sounded like you said "DVI-D" on its own was good enough.

These are the different types of DVI, so see if you have a DVI-D/I dual link lying around.
