I have 2 RAMs and my PC won't boot up when I plug in one specific RAM.

So basically it is this, I have 2 RAMS

4 GB Corsair
8 GB Kingston HyperX

My motherboard is Digilite G41

http://smartlink.co.in/pDetails.aspx?PID=2&ID=15&PRODID=66 -> This gives a detailed specs on my Mobo.

It says it support dual-channel (upto 1333 Mhz)

Kingston is 1600 Mhz, but I assume that since it is just downclokcing, wouldnt it happen automatically?

If so, the RAM must have a manufacture defect and I can try a replacement. Or is this type of 'mixing' RAMs completely wrong and bound not to work? If so I'll get a Corsair 4GB instead of trying with another 8 Gigs.

Please enlighten me if the mixing is the issue or the RAM could be at fault.

Also if I boot up with 4 GB and in BIOS change Clock to 667Mhz and then reboot with new RAM also or just the old RAM alone the rebooting fails (keeps restarting) I then have to clear CMOS to get it back to work.

Summary:

I can boot up with 4 GB normally.
I cannot boot up with 4 GB and BIOS set to 667Mhz(why?) or 800 Mhz (obviously)
I cannot boot up at all (667Mhz, 800Mhz or Auto in BIOS) with 8 GB alone or combined with 4 GB. If I keep trying sometimes it boots up normally but MyComputer (properties) shows only 4 GB, whereas CPUZ and AIDA64 show 12 GB (both Corsair and Kingston)

Any help appreciated!

Edit: I live in a pretty isolated area due to work (projects) so I cannot move back and forth to get and try something without knowing if it would work for certain! So please do respond "no harm in trying", else I would have done that than posting online. Thanks for understanding.

Hi,
1) your motherboard does not support 8GB modules. It supports a MAX of 8GB with two, 4GB modules.

2) 1333MHz is achievable by overclocking the CPU. If the CPU can't be overclocked it's 1066MHz. I believe they share a common base clock so if you overclock the CPU by 30% you also overclock the RAM by 30% (though you should have multipliers you can adjust).

Don't quote me but I think it works like this:
a) RAM at 1066MHz
b) overclock CPU by 30%
c) RAM now at 1386MHz (1.3x1066MHz)

3) You need another 4GB module if you want 8GB. It's ideal to get the SAME module, however if you must get a different one then it must have:
a) same frequency (1333MHz), and
b) same CAS (i.e. CAS9, or 9-x-x-x-xx).

4) Usually only ONE of the slots works if...

5) Always test with MEMTEST www.memtest.org (if boot doesn't work, change boot order so DVD or USB stick is first. Some motherboards don't support USB boot).

6) BIOS updates for the motherboard sometimes contain new memory profiles for easy, one-click setup in BIOS if it doesn't detect your memory already.

You can't easily auto-apply settings if mixing different models.

@photonboy: Thanks for the detailed explanation, will get an exact 4GB module and let you know how it pans out. :)

@Anas Bashar: Thank you for the response.

By the way, do you guys think getting a single 8GB would work? If so, I tried using the Kingston 8GB alone today (without 4GB), it didnt boot up, is it because the clocking frequency is 1600 Mhz (higher than Mobo's 1333 Mhz?). Or is there something else wrong with my Mobo (tried 8 Gigs on both slots, same result).

@Supahos thank you for the response, I have googled relentlessly and couldn't find a BIOS fix. I guess thats what I get for getting a shitty mobo. :/

Will try with a 4Gigs RAM, hope it works.
