Is Mantle a Deal Breaker?

I have two 7950s (need a new power supply to use both) but have been thinking about selling them and buying a GTX 780 to avoid getting a new power supply and for the free games. I heard about Mantle and am curious if I should bank on that being a game changer in the GPU department since it supposedly will greatly increase AMD GPU performance. Or is it not going to be a big deal and I should just get the 780?

Solution
It really depends on what you're gonna play.

Some games are better optimized for Nvidia cards such as AC4 who has pared with Nvidia to bring out the best features to Nvidia cards.

While games like BF4 which will implement mantle to improve FPS.

Why not get the AMD equivelant of a GTX 780? a R9 280X? or R9 290?

TBH either way the card will do you fine, AMD cards have a slight edge on certain games and the same goes for Nvidia cards.

If you want my opinion I'd suggest get get the GTX 780 because of the free games. AMD's 'free games' are games from 2012 and even for the top end AMD cards you still get those 2012 games.
Its up to you though.

For the GTX 780 I'd suggest..

MSI N780 TF...

MSI N780 TF:

EVGA SC w/ ACX Cooler:

Gigabyte 3x Windforce GTX 780:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125471

any of these three cards you won't be dissapointed with.
The evga has the highest clock, most expensive worst of the 3 at cooling.
The Gigabyte and MSI both have the same clock, roughly the same cooling with Gigabyte at a slight edge (awesome cooling btw).

The Gigabyte is very long so be cautious of that and find out its dimensions.

The MSI 780 is the cheapest of the three but has the best rating of the three on newegg. It's also the cheapest and a great overclocker.

Hope this can help you decide on what you want.

I'll try to include the amd equivelants but im at school right now and don't have the time to go digging about

This is true but not all games utiliize crossfire as well as they would with a single card.
I've read its better to get the best single card you can get instead of buying two of a lower price.

I could be wrong though

Thanks, but as much as I want to wait, it is not an option. I need to make a decision by thanksgiving due to the holidays due to the fact my family needs to know what I want ( I need to either ask for a PSU or cash)

Thank you for your opinion. I would look at the AMD 290 or 290x but I do not have time to wait for the after market coolers as I heard they will not come out until December and I only have until just before thanksgiving to make my decision

If you don't have time I'd get one of the suggest GTX 780s. They're just as good as the R9 290s but more expensive. Some variants of the 780 are more powerful than the 290x(this includes the one I suggested)

I actually heard the rumor via word of mouth. However, I made some internet search and found this.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mantle_(GPU_API)
http://www.usgamer.net/articles/amds-mantle-and-why-valve-might-want-to-worry

Wikipedia is not really a reliable source so there is no assurance that Nvidia and Intel will also utilize Mantle.

I also read somewhere that Mantle will only be compatible to GCN hardware.

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/60597-amds-mantle-api-is-not-open-source-compatible-only-with-amd-gpus/

Anyway, it seems like Nvidia also has something of its own. Although I don't exactly know what NVAPI is, the concept and benefits are somewhat similar to what Mantle has.

The last thing I saw was this article :- http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/graphics/display/20131003232053_AMD_Mantle_Is_Proprietary_Now_But_It_Will_Become_Widely_Available_to_Others.html and nowhere does it say that Nvidia are going to be using Mantle any time soon.
