Question on 3770k (PCIE 3.0) and FX-8350 (PCIE 2.0) for future multi-gpu setup

Hi all,

I currently have an FX-8350 @ 4.7 ghz with Asus Sabertooth. I have been relatively happy with it, but kind of hit a snag when looking at my future plans. The sabertooth is limited to PCIE 2.0 and from what I have read dual high end GPU setups (ie GTX 780/R9 290X) actually benefit from PCIE 3.0. The FX-8350 also uses quite a bit more power (meaning I would most likely need to upgrade my 860w PSU as well).

I was able to find a brand new 3770k and Maximus Extreme V (PCIE 3.0) locally for about $420. Is it worth the upgrade for future multi-gpu setups?

That is a good deal, although not completely necessary, it will give you a bit of a performance boost later on. A good 860W PSU could handle an 8350 with xfire or sli, though.

From what I understand. The processor is the limiting factor for 3.0. The only processor that even exceeds the limit of pcie 2.0 is the six core i7 extreme processors. So I think that it will be a while before you see any benifit. Especially now that AMD is done (ATM) with desktop processors meaning that intel wont release significantly faster processors any time soon. I'd wait until you actually have a need for it. Otherwise id see it as a waste of money.
