I'm building this for my brother. All he wants out of this is for gaming. He only plays on a 1680x1050 resolution. He doesn't want to overclock which lets face it, really doesn't do much to increase real world performance. I've heard you want a 1:2 ration in relation to price of cpu to video card. So I'm think the fx6300 with the gtx760 is a more balanced setup, and eventually if needed he could upgrade to the steam roller or whatever those next gen amd cpu's are. If someone can confirm this is the correct thinking, that would be great.

Also I am able to get a really sweet deal with a micro-center right near me. I've been able to get a complete build for under 700 USD The amd am3+ 970 board seems to somehow come free with the fx6300 bundle even though it states $40 off of the $80

AMD FX 6300 Black Edition 3.5GHz Six-Core Socket A SKU: 006759 $109.99
MSI 970A-G46 AM3+ ATX AMD Motherboard SKU: 999540 $0.00
8GB DDR3-1600 PC3-12800) Desktop SKU 821884 $64.99
PNY VCGGTX7602XPB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 2048MB GD SKU: 663070 $249.99
Western Digital WD Blue 500GB 7,200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb SKU: 212894 $54.99
Thermaltake V3 Black Edition ATX Mid Tower SKU: 497818 $39.99
Microsoft WIN8.1 64BIT ENG 1PK DVD SKU: 819565 $99.99
Corsair CX Series CX430M SKU: 190298 $47.99

Total Rebates: $30 off
Total with tax & rebates: $683

Would it be worth it to go the intel platform, or maybe step up to the 7950 boost with the fx 6300?

Yeah I was thinking it would be more than enough but also it's unlikely he would be upgrading any time soon so, you have to think about future proofing a bit too. Not sure how it would handle bf4 and beyond with the 7870.

FX 6300 is a great little budget CPU for gaming! I would suggest the 7950 if its price is appropriate at your Microcenter. It is better than the 760 and 7870. But between the 7870 and 760 then certainly go for the 760.

What PSU?

EDIT: Then again at his resolution none of the 3 cards mentioned will have issues for a while.

The corsair 430watt it has a single rail with 32 amps. video card at 150 watts/12=12.5 amps, amd cpu 95 watts/12=7.91 amps and fans etc shouldn't amount to more than 22 amps and 300 watts used. So thinking that should be enough.

Even at 1080p, a 7870 will run all games at high and some at max.

Get a better PSU. You really need 500w due to connectors required for anything over a 7850. Get an xfx550w unit.

Really? The gtx 760 needs two 6 pin connectors, and I think the 7950 only asks for one. The corsair unit has one 6 connector and one 8 connector

The 760 needs an 8 pin and a 6 pin.

The 7950 needs two 6-pins.

The cx430 has only ONE 6+2 pin connector. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139026

It is NOT a good idea to run either of these on 430w.

The gtx 760 requires 30A on the 12v+ rail. the CX 430 has only 32A and you would be running it right at the limit. This is NEVER a good idea.

Plain and simple, get a 500w unit.

Ahhh thanks for pointing that out. It's kind of miss stated on the microcenter site then. It states 1 x 8-pin atx 12v connector and 1 x 6-pin graphics connector.

Not trying to disagree to just disagree but a lot of times people estimate they need way more watts than they really need. Most graphics card manufacturers state you need a minimum of 500 watts and 30 amps but that's assuming your psu has two separate 12v rails. From what I've read and learned the amps are the most important. So a 430watt 32 amp single 12v rail psu should be plenty for a system like this, if you have the right connectors.

If this isn't true can you point to why it isn't instead of just saying it's not a good idea? I would be interested to know.

Thanks

Technically it will work, but you need a 6-pin adapter to use any of these cards. This puts more stress on the PSU than if it had 2 6-pins. Those connectors are not made for alot of wattage, nor is a typical molex connector. It is just plain and simple not a good idea. Get the xfx450. It has the required connectors and 34A on the 12v+ rail.

That's actually not true, the 760 uses 150 watts at load 150 watts divided by 12 is 12.5 amps not 30. They give an estimate of 500 watts and 30 amps for your hole system over 2 12 volt rails

Dude we're not talking about the connectors lol. I know you don't want to use the molex. It stated on the microcenter website it had 1 x 8-pin and 1 x 6-pin. So besides that that, 32 amp psu should of been enough.

Tiny, slow down and breath, re read what I said. I wasn't disagreeing with you.

You are right about the 1 x 8-pin being a cpu connector I wasn't disagreeing, I knew I miss read that. I skimmed over that part. This is isn't my first time around the block building a computer m8...lol

All I am saying is that if you want to use the cx430 with ANY of the GPU's listed, you will HAVE TO use a molex adapter.

Yes, a 32a PSU is enough for these cards, I understand.

Yes if I had read it correctly I would have realized that before posting it in here. Thanks for that lol
