On start up this morning, my computer powered on, but the screen was black. I turned it off, waited a bit and then turned it on. It booted up, but cursor and keyboard would not work. I turned it off again, tried to restart and screen is once again black.

You can take the HDD out of the computer and put in in a different one to get your DATA.

Thank you for a very quick response. I'll have to check with my friends to find someone who knows how to do that!! I'm very limited on expertise, retired, and trying to not have to take it to a computer store and be taken advantage of.

Hi,
You would have a SATA drive which would be compatible with any modern desktop.

1) remove SATA drive
2) remove the adapter if there is one on the end of the drive
3) Power down a PC and open the case
4) attach the data and power cables
5) bootup and copy data to another drive or DVD

I've been using this BlacX for several years. Simply plug into a PC, then slide your 2.5" drive into it, turn it on and it shows up in Windows. No need to buy another SATA data cable or open up a case.
