Case fan connections

So i know that case fans can connect to MOBO headers and the PSU directly via 8 pin adapter. I was wondering though, as long as you have the right adapter, can a 3/4 pin fan connect to any power connection (molex, SATA power etc.)? If so can you use any unused connection on serial cable? Thank you.

I am fairly sure with specific adapters yes you can connect a fan to almost anything that is outputting power, in fact if you got some weird adapter you could probably connect to it to a pci slot.
