I have a Netgear router DG834G (ip address 192.168.0.1) which works perfectly. I want to use an old Edimax router as an access point only (- i.e.DHCP disabled) ..connecting a spare Netgear router lan socket to an Edimax lan socket via 200 mbps Homeplugs/lan cables.

I have reset the Edimax to default. It's ip adress is 192.168.2.1.

I have connected the Edimax direct to a laptop's LAN port. I can change the DHCP setting (ie to "disable").. the SSID, the encryption type & password..etc etc. and it all saves..HOWEVER...

..what I cannot do is to alter the IP address in the LAN section of the Edimax interface to 192.168.0.2 (or similar)? I alter the numbers but when the save button is pressed the "egg-timer" icon comes on and stays on. It will not accept the change in ip address.
Anyone got an idea why not.
I have successfully set up a Netgear DG834G and a Technicolor 582 router as access points..so cannot fathom out why the Ediamx won't respond?!

If you cannot change the Edimax IP address to any address in the Netgear network 192.168.0.2 to .254, and you must use a different network then attach the LAN port of the Netgear to the WAN port of the Edimax and make it a different subnet. Give the Edimax a WAN gateway of 192.168.0.1 so it directs its traffic to the Netgear. Use different wireless channel, and SSID. It is not as convenient for seamless roaming, but if your devices are used in the area around the Edimax it will solve the issue.

The other choice is to buy a new router to use as an AP -- Newegg has a smoking deal today on the ASUS RT-N56U ($40 after rebate, FS) and that is a great router, best in class. I bought two just to have them handy for my next client network build (I would have bought more but the rebate is limited to two).
