I have 2 questions:

1. Is isopropyl alcohol rubs 70% OK to remove thermal paste from my CPU (should I take it off of the stock fan or just leave the smeared old stuff?)? They are medical products.

2. The cooler installation says to adhere the backplate to the mobo with the included tape... Is this a bad idea? Seems kind of iffy to me.

CPU: 3570k, Cooler: Zalman LQ-315

Thanks, TH, forever in your debt

Solution
1) You can use alcohol rubs/wipes, no problems with that idea (I'd imagine they would be rather effective)
2) The tape is to hold the backplate for installation, it also provides some insulation for the backplate. I usually do not tape the backplate to the motherboard, instead only affixing the tape to the backplate and keeping the sticky covered on the motherboard side. You can try that but installation of the cooler may be tricky then

You should most definitely remove the old paste from your CPU! You want both surfaces (CPU and cooler) to be as clean as possible. Be sure to remove any plastic film or protective covering from the cooler surface that mates with the CPU. The only exception is if the cooler comes with paste pre-applied and you should leave that intact. This should all be covered in the Zallman instructions.

I meant from the cooler and not the IHS, thinking about RMAs here.

It shouldn't make any difference on an otherwise qualified RMA.
