Today, a friend of my dad loaded a dual boot onto my HDD. I was ok the first time using it, and windows was ok. However, my computer suddenly froze. I restarted the computer and got the error above. I went into the bios to try and fix the problem (I assumed it was an error in the partition), but was unable to fix anything. Instead, I kept getting the error stated above. This is a brand new hard drive, with under 3 hours of use. I need help understanding what the problem is and how I can fix this. I don't think the hard drive could just fail out of the blue.

Additional details:

WD Black 1 TB HDD
I had Ubuntu 12.04 (?) on it on a separate partition
I had Windows 7 Pro 64 bit on another partition

Will answer any questions or info needed.

Thanks in advance!

SMART Bad Status or indeed any SMART warning is not triggered by partition errors, it's the actual hard drive that's faulty and it cannot be fixed. You've been unlucky with a "bad" new hard drive which does happen with a small percentage of new drives.

Contact WD. Explain the situation and ask them for an RMA (Returned Merchandise Authorisation) under the terms of their warranty. They should replace it free of charge.
