GPU upgrade help

I want to upgrade my pc's GPU. I currently have a Radeon HD 6670, AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Thuban 2.8GHz a 430 watt psu and ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 - AM3 - AMD 880G. I want to upgrade to game. My price range is about 500 to upgrade. what would be a good GPU to get and does anything else need upgrading. thanks

a 7970 is a great option and they are cheap now, but I wouldn't get that particular XFX version. I had two 7950's with that cooler and they got terribly hot. The cooler was completely inadequate for any intense loading. The GPU's heated up extremely rapidly and even though the fans ramped up and were noisy, they GPU's still got around 85-95C in no time, then the GPUs throttled.

I quickly changed them for ICEq Turbos which are awesome and vent the heat out of the case as a bonus.
