A few days ago a message popped up saying something about a usb device that stopped working. I don't remember the exact message, but it was something to that effect.

Today I noticed that my external usb hdd wasn't deleting files. I tried to delete a folder with a small game in it (just 20 mb or so) and it took several minutes before I gave up. So I tried restarting the pc, that didn't help. Tried unplugging the usb/ then power, then changing the usb port, nothing seemed to work, but now the hard drive takes several minutes show up in "my computer." When it does show up, it just shows up as "H:" and nothing about the space used or remaining, like my internal hard drive shows. When I click on the drive, it acts like it's loading, but will never load. So where it was taking forever (and failing) to open or delete files, now I can't even see the folders at all.

In device manager, the hard drive shows up and says "this device is working properly" but obviously it's not working properly. I can't hear any weird noises or anything, and it's worked fine up until I saw the error message the other day. I tried disabling and re-enabling the drive, tried uninstalling but it will "uninstall" forever and never finish. Even random things on my computer take forever to load when I have the drive plugged in, like MS Word. But when the drive is unplugged, everything runs smoothly.

I really don't know how to proceed because anything that tries to check the drive is slower and slower the more I try to fix it. Even "Pandora Recovery" won't load until I unplug the external hard drive. If I try to open the drive, try to "populate" from the device manager, try to do anything that accesses the drive, it just slows my system to a crawl that never seems to finish.

I've read literally dozens and dozens of external hard drive troubleshooting threads, but nothing seems to help and nothing is quite like what I'm experiencing. Does anyone have advice on how I should proceed? I really don't want to lose the files I have on that external hard drive. It's wdd ext hd 1021 usb in my device manager, if that helps. I tried the hard drive on my wife's computer, and it was doing the slow thing again, but I don't think her usb ports are 2.0, so that might be why it wasn't working on hers. I don't have any other machine to test it on.

First try another USB cable if you got one.
Also run a chkdsk and see if that helps.
Try testdisk and see if you can extract your files out to another drive.
If all above methods failed, then
1. The USB controller in that external HDD is failing
2. Your HDD is probably faulty
If it's under warranty, then send it back for a replacement, but you will loose all your files
If the warranty is expired or don't care about the warranty, then take the HDD out of the case and connect it internally into your computer and see if that works.
Note that removing it from the external case will cause physical damage to the enclosure which voids your warranty.
Also if remove the HDD and connecting internally does not work, then what that means is your HDD is no good.
If that is true (let's hope HDD is good), then in the end it would be
HDD can't be replaced because the enclosure is damaged and you have lost all your files.

I'm having the same trouble with the same device. Did you get any resolution?

Please let all of us know if any solution is available. I've seen many people have had the same problem, but I have found no appropriate solution yet on this and other forums
