I have been driving myself crazy with my computer thinking it was the power supply because all the sudden the power button wouldn't work. After i had unplugged it when a storm came and then replugged. all the sudden no power but a cmos flash. I replaced battery, tried the cmos reset button but it just kept flashing.

After replacing the power supply it didn't even do the "cmos flash" unless i held down the power button. So I figured it wasn't the supply it was either motherboard or something up with the power supply switch even though i had doublechecked all the wires..

After careful inspection I can see on the motherboard where it has overheated to where it melted some of it.

I was wondering if this computer is still useful I had a noctua d-14 ontop of it and the paste wasn't discolored or anything and seemed to be spread evenly

Do you guys think it would of fried the graphics card i had (660ti) because of this burnout on the motherboard.

I was looking at it and it didn't visibly have any problems.

If it is burnt can anyone recommend a good processor for gaming what would be the top picks so I could kinda compare them.

I won't be overclocking just leaving a stock fan something I can clean easier, the noctua d-14 kinda was intimidating to clean to be honest.

I feel for you and understand your loss but one great thing about all this! Is now you can upgrade and update your pc I know this sucks but sh!t happens but you have a chance now to move on to better hardware and software even tho its a loss there is still light at the end of the tunnel and I am sorry it happen to you but it does happen makes me think I should better protect my systems as I do have the surge protectors but do they really work? as they say they do we live in Indiana we get a lot of storms here early spring and early summer . again make the best of it test what parts you have to see if they work is about all The advice I can give you. And good luck.

Johnny the silly thing is I unplugged it due to a big storm and then went to bed, my girlfriend plugged it in and tryed to turn it on and bam nothing worked. I thought it was a loose cable or something small.

The motherboard is melted kinda by a compositor its hard to get a good pic of it i'm going to look around. Usually in storms and stuff on rare occasions ill have to reconnect and blow off some old dust and stuff to get connectors working but ive never had a problem this big.

I agree with Johnny it will be nice to have new components but if all I have to replace is the motherboard then that would be great too. Does anyone think this looks like a fried/damaged cpu, I took some pretty upclose pictures it looks a little extra yellow and orange to a bit to me.

Thanks again everyone
