Hello,

What would be a good graphics card to pair with an i5-760 quad core @2.80 ghz? Something that will give me power but not be bottle necked by my CPU.

I am a console gamer looking to take my first steps into PC gaming. I'm looking to make my pre-built 2009 Gateway DX4831 into a decent gaming machine. I'll list the specs for this pc below.

Gateway DX4831:
OS: Windows 7 64 bit.
CPU: i3-530 Dual-core @ 2.93 ghz (Will be swapped for the i5-760)
Graphics: Intergrated
Ram: 6 GB DDR3 1333 Mhz (2x2 gb and 2x1 gb)
Motherboard: Gateway H57M01; LGA1156 CPU socket; PCI Express 1.0 16x.
PSU: 250 watt (Will be swapped for 500 watt)
Moniter: 60hz Gateway 1600x900 (Sticking to this resolution; no 1080p for me)

I've already purchased the i5-760 and a 500 watt PSU. Overclocking is also out of the question because of the limitations of my motherboard.

At this point I've really been considering a GTX 660. What do you guys think?

I've also heard that some of the AMD cards are not compatible with PCI Express 1.0 so I have not considered any of those cards.

PS: Sorry for the lengthy post, but I think I included everything that you would need to know to give me some good advice. Also, thanks in advance.

Solution
Bottlenecking would really depend on the game, the i5 760 is still a pretty decent CPU so a 660 would be a nice pairing for that system

Games such as BF4/Crysis 3 may be limited a bit, but it still performs very well for an old chip

If possible, adding 2GB more ram into that system would also be a nice little addition

Awesome. Thanks for that chart. The RAM will eventually be upgraded but I still got to do some research on that (max ram for my Mobo, combining different brands of RAM, etc). I'll update my current RAM info too. (Its 2x2 gb and 2x1 gb totalling 6 gb of ram)

Thanks for the extra feedback. For a game like BF4 what kind of frames do you think I would be getting running the game in Medium settings @1600x900 resolution if I did get a 660? My goal here is obviously 60 fps but I would have no problem lowering the resolution or graphics to attain it.

Medium settings at that resolution with your system should definitely give you 60FPS, you could definitely play on high especially on 1600x900. Tweaking settings is what's best about PC gaming :p

AMD cards are much better for BF4 so that's something you could consider

Have a look

Hmm your motherboard only has a PCI-Express 1.0 slot?

Yes, all of my PCI-Express slots are 1.0. Newer AMD cards are incompatible right?

True. Either way i'm sure I will be happy with whatever performance I get. And since I've been playing PS3 for the last 6 years I'm sure what ever results I get on this PC will blow my mind.

Well man, it was nice chatting with you. Thanks for all the reassurance and info you've given me on this PC upgrade I'm working on. I really appreciate it. Have a good night.
