Just bought an HP Envy 700-030qe CTO Desktop PC. Because HP does not offer a SS Hybrid drive I decided to install one myself and move the drive that came with the computer to the 2nd drive position. I successfully installed the new drive, restored the system and reformatted the original drive using an external Apricorn adapter. To complete installation of the 2nd drive you need the SATA connector integral in the wiring harness (no problem) and a separate power cable. The latter was not supplied. Called HP support and was curtly told that HP will not sell me the part since I did not buy a second disk drive when I bought the computer.

Has anyone either found a way around this idiotic and very customer unfriendly HP policy or otherwise know of a 3rd party where I can buy the cable?

How do you have it running? Usually it's two cables. The data cable that goes between the drive and the motherboard, and a power cable that comes from the PSU. As I said it sounds/sounded like you had it running. Just use a power cable from the PSU. If you don't have a SATA power plug for some reason then use a "molex" to SATA adapter.

I'm confused. You said you installed the new drive and have it up and running. But then you said you "need the SATA connector integral in the wiring harness (no problem) and a separate power cable." If you have a data and power cable going to the new drive, which you should as you have it up and running, I'm lost as to what you need. Is it working or not? If you have windows working on the new drive, then your done. Sit back and enjoy the space.

Sorry for the confusion. The computer comes with a wiring harness that has multiple DATA connectors so there is no problem there. HP utilizes a separate cable to supply power from outputs on the motherboard to the disk drives. There is only ONE cable so I cannot get power to the 2nd drive. It is this cable that I am looking for. I have since found out it is HP parts number 697736-001. The HP Parts Store shows the part as "not orderable" and refers you to unspecified "resellers". Any suggestions?

Thanks 4745454b and Y0GI for your assistance. It looks like I have the problem solved - for now. Turned out I had it backwards. I have the POWER cable as part of the wiring harness but am missing the SATA cable. Once I had the right name I found the cable at several online suppliers and have one on order. Am anxious to try everything out as soon as it arrives. Thanks again!
