Gaming On an HDTV

My HDTV, Panasonic VIERA TC-L37E5, does not appear to display true 1080p because when I set it to 1920x1080 60Hz progressive in the nVidia control panel the picture is overscanned on the TV, it is like it is too big to fit within the confines of the screen. I understand this is a common issue with HDTVs and I have been correcting this with nVidia's resize options, but this actually changes the output resolution to 1858x1026 which is just a bogus, non-standard res.

My first question is: Is it possible to just resize or scale a 1080p output res with the control panel instead of actually changing the output resolution? I can't find it through my own investigations, but I've come to learn that that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I don't really want to play games at an odd resolution like 1858x1026.

Second: Is there an online resource that reports whether particular HDTVs actually operate correctly as PC monitors, supporting full HD resolutions instead of near-HD resolutions?

Thanks for the advice.

Windows 7 64
EVGA GTX 760 (current WHQL drivers) attached to TV via HDMI

You can try changing the format of the TV, I can't remember the specific term, but there should be a button on your remote to change between different screen formats, H-Fill, Fill, True, Normal, Stretch, etc... try another one of those to see if it improves it, I think you might want True.

My computer wasn't displaying right on my hdtv using hdmi and integrated graphics. I had to change the display settings on the tv itself to get it to work and now it fits properly at 1920x1080. It wasn't until I looked in the manual for the TV that I realized this though

Oh dang! The TV had a hidden "HD Size" menu option under the Picture category. Size 2 was needed, now it fits perfectly.

Thanks for the suggestions, I wouldn't have delved deeper in the menu if you hadn't commented.
