I have Crossfired R9 280x's and the top card gets very hot when running Crisis3 or Metro Last night (or anything intensive)
It holds steady with Borderland 2. These are Gigabit cards with triple fans and I still reach 85c fast and start to worry. I know they will reach 95c if I do not stop the process. So the question. Is this normal?

Solution

most likely yeah, try and get some cooler air on that card then report back, if you can add fans and put your case in a spot where it can get more fresh air
Yes, those cards run VERY hot. and having them close to one another just makes it worse.

AMD says that temperatures in the 90s will NOT hurt the cards.

The old 4870 used to get toasty as did some of the GTX 4XX cards. They will seemed to live.

You can use something like Afterburner or even AMD's included Catalyst Control Center to increase the fan speed to keep things cooler(make sure you go higher than the speed that lets it get to 95.).

The fans are running at 100% on the top card, less on the bottom card which holds steady mid 70c at 60-70% fan speed. I use Catalyst to monitor the cards but you can only look at one at a time which is a pain in game full screen.

I monitor with Catalyst and the top fan is maxed.

I think that only applies for the r9 290s lol whorun on the hawai chip, 280x still runs on tahiti.
I've seen reviews where the r9 280x on load runs only at 75 degrees max with aftermarket coolers. Are yours aftermarket or reference?

Gigabyte R9 280X three fans (triangle cool)
the bottom card runs at those temps. I think I just need to get cooler air into the box.
