Long story short, I received a second 7950 for free, so obviously I thought hey lets crossfire these bad boys. But to my disappointment, I only have one 3.0x16 socket type of that length.
So my question to you is,
do you think it would be worth it ($115-$130) to get a new mobo just to crossfire, or should i hold out and wait until I really need a new graphics card and forget about crossfiring
question is really will cross-firing two 7950's be effective enough to warrant $120 now or wait and get a newer card in 5-6 months (for probably double that)
thanks for your help -Jim

I wouldn't crossfire anything other than the newest R9-290 or 290X series cards as they have corrected the issues with runt/dropped frames at the hardware level. Please see Q3 and A3 on this page:

A 2.0 x16 socket will work equally well.
Worth is something only YOU can determine.
If graphics performance is not a problem now, just sell the 7950 now, while it still has some value. Check on ebay, I might expect $175.
If you need graphics power now, sell both 7950 cards and replace with a top single card.

I would get aboard and crossfire since you just got gifted a $200+ card, why not use it. They are fixing the frame pacing issue in the drivers for the cards and pretty much within acceptable levels after 13.8 and improving! From the answer pointed to above"3) Frame pacing for the R9 270, R9 280 and HD 7000 Series systems will require a software solution. Our engineers are working on that right now, and we intend to release a driver this quarter to resolve the issue."

That's what I'm thinking because I mean how much is the newest one right now, like 590? If crossfiring two 7950's can give my rig enough longevity for a full year while that price comes down (of the latest series) I'm thinking it's worth it. Really more I'm just questioning how much of an increase in performance I would get. thanks for your reply

What kind of processor are you running? i think an important question here might be whether your cpu will bottleneck with two 7950s.If you are using a i5-4670K, and presumably a Z87 based motherboard(so you can oc the "K"),
You have a chipset that can run 2 pcie x16 slots at X8/X8.
That is plenty for cf.
Exactly which motherboard do you currently have?
You will also need a decent 700w psu for cf of 7950 cards.
From the link from rolli59, it looks like a 37% boost in fps.
As yet, the frame response inconsistencies have not yet been fixed as well in dual cards as they have been in dual gpu cards.
The $200 each from your 7950 cards + $100 for the motherboard would buy you a GTX780.
