Hello. I was wondering if you could help me figure out a solution for an undetected CD/DVD on an HP Pavilion dv9700 using Vista Business that has gone missing from the BIOS as well as 'device manager' and 'computer'. About a year ago, the computer was hit with a Trojan as well as an HKey hacker-and have done A LOT of damage (I was/am using Norton 360 for all the good it has done). I have tried several 'fixes' including the removal of upper and lower filters in 'regedit', downloading driver updates from both Microsoft and HP (both of which fail to complete and shut down immediately after stating that they will only work with windows vista-which it IS),I have also downloaded a couple of 'driver/software fixers' as well as a DVD burner (Nero) in hopes it would somehow correct the issue-to no avail. I tried calling HP customer service, but since I am out of warranty they feel I should buy a new computer from them and refuse to help. The DVD Rom is New (HP replaced the CD/DVD when it was under warranty -one week before the Trojan got through)--so I do not believe it is a hardware issue.I can hear it spin when a DVD is inserted-beeps and all...but the computer does not know it exists. I have run comprehensive scans in BIOS -which states it is fine-yet most of the 'f' keys do not respond upon reboot, so I cannot 'see' what is going on.
I have NOTHING on this computer of value, and wish to reconfigure it back to factory settings (just in case a previous virus caused this)-however, I cannot play the restorative DVD, all previous restore points have gone missing and the computer refuses to reboot to the BIOS recovery (using f11). Please,Please help. Though it may be a few years behind the times, I love this computer, and truly wish to reset it to a time I could trust it,. Thank you.

The CD/DVD drive is more than likely DEAD. You can try to remove the drive (with the system shut down of course) and see it the "plug is dirty and reinstall the drive start the system up and see if it is found, if not the drive died fairly common problem, have replace many on customers laptops over the years.
