How important is a ssd for gaming?

I'm tempted to buy one. But I don't know if my motherboard supports SATA III. Even if i had SATA II I would benefit a lot right?

You would benefit for OS and general use, but SSDs really are not very helpful for gaming. And yes, even with a SATA II port, SSDs work quite well.
