Is it possible to do Cross Fire with 2 different amd cards if they have the same architecture?

Someone told me it worked to CF 2 different AMD cards if they have the same architecture.

Is that true?

The manufacture can be different but it must be the same series card. HD 79xx + 79xx= works. 79xx + 78xx= won't work. One thing to keep in mind is if they are different clock speeds the faster one will down clock to the slower card.

Unless of course you take into account the 7870 LE, which while marked as a 78xx series, shares the same underlying architecture with the 79xx series, therefore CrossFires with 7870 LE or 79xx cards only.

If you are unable to determine if your card choices will CrossFire correctly, it may be better to just ask in the forum before committing to a purchase decision.
