GTX 780 or AMD R9 290?

Solution
It looks like they are about even at stock speeds. There are a few things to consider, however.

Right now, the R9 series is not a recommended buy due to the excessive heat and noise they produce with the reference cooler. At this point, there is no word on when the non-reference coolers will be available, or if they will completely mitigate the heat and noise issues. The big problem with the heat is that it actually throttles the core clock speeds well below their stock levels, so your performance will undoubtedly be lower than that of a reviewer using an open test bench. The only solution is to turn up the fan and increase the noise, which is already at the noisiest levels of any single GPU video card (ever!). If you must get...

If you must get an R9 card, then you must wait on your decision, there are no two ways about it.

On the other hand, if you were getting a GTX 780, chances are you would be picking up one of the many custom, factory overclocked cards, so the performance numbers would shift considerably in favor of the GTX 780 (most factory overclocked 780s run faster than a Titan out of the box). The heat and noise would be a complete non-factor with this option as well. In addition, you would get the benefit of the unique technologies that Nvidia employs, including: PhysX, Adaptive VSync, Shadowplay, TXAA, FXAA, and some of the new graphics options like HBAO+. And even though the GTX 780 is more expensive, it is available and ready to go right now and comes with three free games to help even out the value.
