Is it a good idea to install a laptop hard drive on a desktop?

It's totally fine, laptop hard drives are just small versions of their desktop counterparts (2.5" vs 3.5", respectively). As long as there is a place to put the harddrive in your desktop, you're good to go. All the connectors are the same (SATA)
