Hi guys,

I'm using a Samsung ATIV book 7, it's brand new, but I'm having problems with adjusting the screen brightness. Neither the key controls, nor tampering with any Control Panel settings make any difference. It set itself to a relatively low level and won't react to anything.

It has an Intel HD400 in it and a Radeon 8500M HD.

My battery is fine, so the screen birghtness isn't set/locked due to some super-low power state.

I have searched far and wide for a solution - apparently I'm not alone with this problem, people with all kinds of laptops have run into it. Barely any solutions though.

I found a suggestion here:
http://windowsforum.com/threads/cant-adjust-display-bri...

I'll copy the main post here for convenience:
Anyone still unable to solve the problem try the following:
Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Device Manager
Once the Device Manger box opens expand the "Monitors" tab
Left Click and Uninstall the monitor listed
Then select the Scan for Hardware Changes Icon
Sounds bizarre, but the adjust display brightness should reappear.

Now, my question is, does this sound like a good idea? What happens when I uninstall the monitor - will I still be able to see anything? (Sorry if this is a dumb question). Would you recommend trying the suggested solution above?

I'm cautious, as I don't want to mess up my brand new laptop... But I also don't want to return the whole thing right away if this brightness issue is something that can be solved with a few clicks.

Thanks!

So you have already tried setting the power options to high performance in the control panel?

Hm, it has always been on the default "Samsung optimized" and I was able to adjust the brightness in this mode earlier (forgot to say that sorry).

Now that you said it I went and double-checked - it was still in this default mode, so I switched to high performance and back to Samsung optimized, and now I can change the brightness normally in both modes. The problem is solved for now - thank you!

However it still sounds like unusual behaviour, as I was supposed to be able to do that without switching the modes there and back. It's as if the brightness got stuck in Samsung preset mode for some reason. I wonder if this is something I should be concerned about...?

Yeah forget that Samsung optimised mode , it a real pain sometimes , best to run it at just "High Performance" and leave the brightness at high if the option is still there to adjust the brightness.
I would disable the samsung power software or remove it from starting up if its cauing this problem, it always tries to take over to do power saving where as Windows can do it with out it , its just more Bloatware from Samsung really and you don't need their software controlling the power saving and performance on the computer.

OK. Maybe I'll go and hand over the controls to Windows :)

Thanks for your reply!
