Is R9 290 a good choice for running next-gen games?

I am thinking of upgrading from GTX 560 to AMD R9 290. Is the card powerful enough for running next-gen games smoothly for 3-4 years? Or should I wait for the 800 series?

I don't know about 3-4 years as that's an eon in terms of gaming in PC development, but I fully expect my R9 290 to provide all the GPU power I need until 4K becomes standard.

I would wait for the non-reference cooler designs to appear first though, as the reference cooler isn't quiet by any means.
