I'd go with a Corsair 900D since it...

Well, I'm not sure where you're trying to hit in terms of performance, but here would be my general recommendations:

Intel E5 2620 v2
Supermicro motherboard and case - Case should have at least 8 x 3.5" bays.
8 x 4 TB HDD - Enterprise models are really expensive, but preferable.
Adaptec or LSI RAID card with 2 mini-SAS connectors for 8 drives. Also should include a BBU module for write caching.
At least 64 GB of ECC Registered RAM (16 GB sticks probably give the best combination of value and support for future expansion)

I would probably use Newegg for most parts, but SuperBiiz typically has the server CPUs for cheaper than Newegg does.

Do you really need an 8 core CPU for a media server? If you're running tons of VMs, I could see where it's needed.

OP - do you want a rack mount server or do you want a full tower server where the hard drives can be hot swapped such as the Corsair 900D?

Thanks for both of your responses. I'd like to be able to transcode up to 10 videos at once and stream them to remote and local clients. I'm gonna need to use a tower.

Here's a Supermicro tower: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811152135

I would only use it with a Supermicro board, though.
If you are looking to do lots of transcoding, you may even need more CPU than the one I suggested, which is only a 6 core chip. You could consider springing for a dual socket board and get two of them or get a single 8 core one like the 2640 v2. You could also get a dual socket board and only populate one socket initially, leaving one for expansion if you see you need more.

Keep in mind that compared to an Athlon X2, these E5s are going to be BLISTERINGLY fast, so if you're unsure, I'd err on the side of saving some money and not overprovisioning.

I'd go with a Corsair 900D since it holds like 15 hard drives and you can hot swap the ones on the bottom rack. I don't think that Super Micro case would be ideal.

You can add as many hard drives as you want with this build and the 4930K should be plenty to keep up with demand.

That sounds good to me! Just two questions though, I'll be running this server headless, is there a reason I should go with a GeForce over something cheap I have lying around the house? And should I add a raid card?

Not at all, the GeForce will let you play games on it if you ever decide to though.
