i'm building a pc to play games like battlefield and CoD and i don't know if i should buy and ips monitor or an LED 144hz refresh rate, should i sacrifice picture quality for refresh rate?

these are the monitors

Asus VS24AH-P 5ms (GTG) IPS

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Asus VG248QE 144hz 1ms (GTG) LED

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

also i'm gonna be using a radeon R9 280X and an AMD fx 6300 (probably overclocked) so i don't know if i'm gonna hit more than 60 FPS in games like battlefield 4

More about : ips panel 144hz

how competitive are you in these FPS games? many professional gamers swear by the higher refresh rate, but for the sake of personal enjoyment I prefer a 60 HZ IPS monitor. but then again, i'm not the best player out there (tho i'm not terrible either), and it has been argued if the increase in fps actually makes a difference in gameplay.

in short, I'd personally go IPS so I can enjoy the nice graphics you're buying rather than completely focusing on the shadow that may or may not have blinked across your screen for 1-2 frames out of that 144fps...

i guess im not a hardcore gamer i mean i used to play black ops for 2-3 hours tops and i'm not gonna be playing shooters only maybe some racing games or RPG's maybe and believe me i'm hesitating on buying and ips display because of "ghosting issues", i haven't had the chance to play games on an IPS display but i would love to have that crisp picture quality that IPS displays provide since i'm also gonna be watching blu ray movies on my computer so really don't know which monitor i should buy

get an IPS display then, I highly doubt 144hz will make any difference at all for you.

the only thing that extra refresh rate buys you is the small possibility of seeing something flash by ever so slightly better. honestly it only matters in fast paced FPS games. for racing games and RPGs, good color reproduction of the IPS display will make the game that much sweeter to play.

It doesn't require a hardcore competitive player to enjoy the benefits of 144hz, or better yet, 120hz with Lightboost. It just takes a player who finds a highly responsive, ultra smooth system to be preferred to more vibrant images.

I personally prefer 120hz to better colors, but I also get nauseated at anything less than 80 FPS.

If you are willing to pay a premium, there is a monitor with a VA panel that is 120hz with a Lightboost similar tech to reduce motion blur.

I believe they are roughly $600.

Actually, this is very well put, and points out a personal bias in both of us. I'm actually very insensitive to fps changes personally, and as long as I stay above 40FPS I can't tell the difference (trust me, I've bought many monitors and tried). however, I'm very sensitive to differences in color reproduction, shadows, and contrast, partly due to my hobbies being visual arts oriented.

@OP so yeah, figure out which type of person you are

i don't think that i'm gonna be able to spend that much money on a monitor that why i was looking for the asus VG248qe which is 144hz and do you know if i'm gonna get more than 60FPS with that gpu and cpu? btw i'm a big plasma tv fan because of the refresh rate and ghosting issues are not acceptable to me so i guess i'm gonna go with the led 144hz refresh rate monitor

if ghosting is not acceptable to you, I'll actually second bystander's recommendation, you want something with lightboost.

Your CPU isn't spectacular, which may hold you back on CPU bound games, and the GPU, as long as you are ok with less than Ultra, should give you 80+ FPS. Of course if you want to play everything at Ultra, you will not see 80+ FPS.

Of course you'll be using the monitor for a long time, assuming you like it, so you can always upgrade around it in the future.

One more thing, that Asus VG248QE monitor is going to have an upgrade kit for G-sync. That may be something you will want some day (though it will require an nvidia card, at least at first).

There is a good chance you'll be more impressed with an IPS screen, but that really depends on what you find important.

even if i overclock the cpu it wouldn't be enough to play every game ultra 1080p?

You can test it right now. Just play your games without v-sync, and see what your FPS are. If you aren't getting well over 60 FPS, you may not gain a lot of benefits of a 144hz monitor unless you turn down some settings. I personally would turn down settings, but some people don't want to.

i don't have the game i'm doing the research to buy the right components since i'm gonna build this computer and use it for 4 or 5 years, in my country i wouldn't be able to find any of those monitors it's not like i can sell the ips monitor and the next day go to a store and buy the 144hz monitor so i'm really trying to get the best components, if you want i can give you the list of the components i've chosen so far, maybe you'll get an idea of how much fps i would get with games like COD and battlefield
