HI,

I need to re install windows 7 after a virus. How would I go about backing up my installed programs as well as windows settings? re installing then adding everything back?

Solution
Backing up a system image will not do the job. You will be backing up the virus/malware too.

You should be able to export your files and settings using windows easy transfer.
After the clean reinstall, you can import them back. Hopefully, the virus is not located there.
Your programs will need to be reinstalled because the registry will be entirely new.

I suggest you consider this as an opportune time to install a SSD.

Thanks Geo. Why an SSD if I may ask? Do you have some sort of RAID setup?

If you use the windows transfer utility, you can also easily copy the virus files as well.

If you want to copy your files, make sure the virus is gone. Run though a few anti-virus scans, a rescue disk like the Avira Antivir one is good to use, just boot to the disk and run a scan. Also run a scan with Malwarebytes.
