PSU Lifespan question

Hello folks! I'm aware that there isn't 100% correct way to say how long your PSU will survive since it all depends on how much it's being used etc.

But still.. I've had my Corsair VX550 since 2008 now, I have no problems with it except for it getting a VERY SMALL ammount of coil whine a couple of days ago (I have to put my ear next to it to hear it).
Anyways, this is what made me think if it might be time to get a new PSU. It's been working flawlessly for 5+ years now (and still is except for the forementioned issue) and my computer runs around 6-12 hours a day on average doing everything from web-browsing browsing to heavy load stuff like games.

The thing is my economy is incredibly bad atm so getting a new PSU would be an expensive ordeal at this time, but if I have to, I have to.
What happens if the PSU dies on me while running? Should I invest now or just hold off?

Thanks in advance!

It depends on the psu. I think generally speaking good psus, like those made by Corsair, tend to fail safely, while generic cheapo psus might destroy your system as they'll run massively out of spec for a while before failing. I'd check out jonnyguru's gutless wonder reviews.
