I am upgrading my HP MediaSmart Server and the highly suggested memory module is a Mushkin 991762, which I have not been able to find. I have however found a 991655 which to me looks exactly the same, but I cannot find any information to see why the different numbers. Any ideas?

I am sure the different numbers you are seeing is the style of heatsink put on the module; Frostbyte vs Stiletto

Directron was the only place I found to compare the two modules (neither are currently available there)

If I may get your opinion, the stick that I found is a used stick. http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/231063896838?lpid=82 I am not a big fan of buying used computer equipment, and I really don't know why the Mushkin is such a hit with the HP Media Smart posters. If you must mix and match ram (adding one stick only) the used Mushkin Silverline 991655 DDR2 4GB would give the best odds of compatibility
A note about ram: Not all ram is created equal, even from the same assembly line and ram is very finicky about other ram it associates with. Even identical ram modules may not like each other and not play well together which is why it is always suggested to upgrade ram as a "kit" which will have matched modules.

The problem is that this is just a small server with a very tiny mobo. It only has one memory slot. I wish it had more, but that is about it. I am upgrading the CPU and ram as well as the OS before all those things are not available. The Ram is especially hard to come by.

Then dual channel operation isn't an issue... bad assumption on my part, you should be fine with the one stick
