I just put in a new powersupply and graphics card in my system. When I powered it on however only the front power led, the geforce logo on the graphics card, the ram lights (cause i have corsair platinum ram) and the power light on the motherboard lighted up. None of the fans started and after a few seconds of running I started to smell like electronic burning!! What could be the problem?

System specs.
Case Silverstone Raven 2
cpu i74770k
motherboard msi z87
gpu gtx 780ti
psu evga supernova 1000w platinum

More about : burning smell coming

sniff out the source and report back. you're going to have to find out where the smell was coming from.

It's really hard to tell. It's kind of everywhere. Is it even safe to attempt turning it on again? I don't want to mess up my parts :(

Could it be I didn't plug something in correctly? My last psu was not modular so with this one I just plugged everything in wherever it fit. Fans are suppose to go in sata right? Does it matter the order of the sata cables! Like what goes in sata 1, 2, 3 ect? Also what's the RERP plug for? There's a RERP 1 and RERP 2 what am I suppose to plug into those?? Please help I am really scared!

do not turn the system back on until you have determined the source. to do so could result in more problems

fans plug into either the fan connectors on your motherboard or the molex connectors on your psu cables. not sata (sata are flat and plug into hard drives).

the manual will let you know which cables should plug into where on the modular psu. often they will have different shapes or colors so you cannot plug in something wrong.

you may need to disassemble the pc piece by piece and look at each piece and smell it to see where the problem is.

check over any exposed circuit boards to look for blown caps or scorching. check wires for any problems.

I don't really have a solution, except maybe plug in your old stuff to make sure it is the new equipment.

Just an FYI, I had a card of mine go up in flames and believe it or not, burn damage was not covered by the warranty, how it is possible that a faulty component on my video card made my card burn but wasn't covered...I don't know. Thanks GALAXY TECH!

I'd check the warranties on the parts you think it might be, would hate for you to be out some money as well =/

the case fans should have started up as soon as you pushed the system power switch if they were connected up to the psu.

if they were connected to the motherboard sometimes they wouldnt start up right away but typically they do.

What plugs into the PERP plugs? I looked at the manual it's useless

look at the cables included... from photos i can see it looks like they all are labeled on the psu connection side. the motherboard cable says "mb" the sata cables say "sata".

what plugs are on the rerp labeled cables?

1x Molex 4 pin x3. I'm gonna try plugging in the fans into that. However before I try it out again, is it possible I just messed up my fans by plugging them into the sata??

sata on left, molex on right.

they will not fit without an adapter of sorts... so wondering how you plugged them in.

i wouldnt turn your system on until you verify the problem. if you did want to test JUST the fans unplug every other component from the psu by disconnecting them from the modular psu so that only the one cable is connected (and make sure you only have fans connected to it)

The h80i is connected to the cpu fan on the motherboard. However there is another cable from the h80i that is for data. So I connected that to data? Also my case fans are spinning but very slowly. I put the fans on high but no luck :(  neither are the led strips I have connected to the PSU. They aren't lighting up

if you had the motherboard unplugged from the mobo (like i suggested) then of course it wouldnt spin. if the mobo was plugged in... then perhaps it didnt get a signal to spin.

sometimes the cpu fan doesnt spool up right away if it is below a certain temperature.

---

how can you put the fans on "high" when you are connecting them to the molex connectors? if you do this they will spin at one speed, max.
