So I went out and bought the new GeForce 760 without doing research first. I thought that my dell studio 8100 was new enough to handle it. i7 processor, 8GB ram, 2.93 ghz. The power supply only has one 6 pin plug for power. The 760 requires two. There is also a very small plug that runs from the mother board to the old video board (grforce gts 240) Will the 760 work without this? Can I upgrade my power supply to one that has two 6 pin video board plugs? Or will I be forced to upgrade to a newer computer? :(  Chris

If you don't have the right power connectors, the video card won't work.
But the good news is that the Dell 8100 holds an ATX (form factor) Power Supply, so you will be able to upgrade it for one that has all the right cables.

I called dell today, they said that my mother board / chipset will not handle any power supply larger than 350 watts. Are they just trying to get me to buy a new computer?

If Dell says so, they are correct, your motherboard won't be able to handle more than that kind of power. (ie. through the PCIe x16 slot)
But the video card that you have chosen will be using additional power connectors going directly from the power supply to the card.
Try to do some digging on the video card to see if it draws more than (about)200 watts via the PCIe slot. I doubt that it does.
I have swapped lots of different video cards into my own Dell machines over the years, but I must admit I've never put in one as big as a GTX 760. Never the less, I believe that with an appropriate PSU, you will be fine.

(And I never met a Dell support person that failed to suggest a new machine would solve all my problems.)

Chris2014,

I am considering to do the same GPU upgrade to my dell studio 8100. Did you find a solution to make it work in the end?

You can upgrade the power supply in a Dell XPS Studio 8100. I have first hand done it and it works just fine. I've gone so far as to transplant the machine into a new case, inserted a bigger more powerful graphics card (AMD Radeon HD 7850) and, A new 650W PSU and about to upgrade it again. It will work and for information I'm using a Seasonic PSU (S12G I believe is the model). It's just getting down and dirty with the machine if you decide to transplant because Dell uses a weird pin out for the power button and LED lights on the case. Good luck to you and be sure you have things very tidy if your using the original case with a GTX 760 Air Flow is a nightmare in that case.

I have been running a an 8100 with a XFX850 that's a 850 watt power supply and a MSI GTX 770. The only problem was the cooling. I ended up moving the whole thing to a Corsair Carbide 500R case. The gfx card runs 15c cooler on the same settings in BF4.
