which is better for gaming intel core i5 3rd generation or i5 4th generation ?

4th Gen will use more power.

Personally though, you could throw 2nd gen into the mix and still be scratching your head as the issue is the same. In the last 3 generations, IPC has got better, overclocking has got worse, and overall things have pretty much stayed the same performance wise.

4th gen is slightly more powerful at the same clock speed, having a higher IPC, instructions per cycle.

When o/c is considered, the 4th gen generally gets a bit hotter, so generally o/c a bit less, but still performs similarly with a lower o/c due to the higher IPC.

In games, you probably wouldn't be able to tell, the GPU will make more of a difference.
