so i need to upgrade my gpu and im not sure which to get. im going to be playing alot of bf4(i game at 1080p) and i know amd cards work well with it but is it worth getting amd just for that and is mantle gonna even help as much as people are saying? my budget is 300-400. im stuck between the 280x 770 and if the 290 better coolers are coming soon (i havnt seen any yet) id probably get one of those. any suggestions

If possible I'd hold out until black Friday or better yet cyber Monday for the savings (or better card for the allotted budget) at the moment i'd have to recommend the 290 though.

Nice article today in Tom's about Mantle http://www.tomshardware.com/news/amd-apu-developer-conf...

Still no actual benchmarks but it looks promising, considering that you won't have to buy anything else in addition to the GPU (G Sync will need a special Monitor to use it).

Wait a little while longer for the non reference R9-290's, in the 300-400 band those will be the best value graphics cards.

Also if you haven't bought BF4 already, it will now come with all new AMD cards above and including the R7-260x : http://anandtech.com/show/7511/amd-announces-new-game-b...

Good call but lets hope they got the bugs worked out of that game that wasnt in the beta version but never the less he can own the new card and a game he can play at a latter date when the bugs are fix I would of choose the 7870 or r 280x both the same cards but one is a bit better and more expensive since its new then the other good luck.

I think the R9 270X is the re-badged 7870 and the R9 280X is the 7950 Ghz edition, the R9 280X is a good deal considering it sells at the price the 7950 used to. While the R9 270X is too close in price to the remaining stock of 7870 with not much of a performance boost.

If I had a budget of 300-400, it would be the R9-290 all the way. Considering that the other cards are 1.5 - 2 years old and the R9-290 is actually a new chip which supports DX11.2 and has True Audio built in.

I belive the 280 r x is a 7870 as far as the 290 its a 7970 and the 290 x is the 7990 card....

The R9 270X is a rebadged 7870 GHz OC edition and the 280X is a rebadged 7970 GHz edition. The 290 is the new Hawaii gpu with some locked shader cores. At this price range, I'd suggest a 280x if you need the gpu now and waiting for non-reference 290s if you can wait until december. The GTX 770 comes with 3 games as well so it's worth a look if you want PhysX but it's really not worth the extra money over a 280X. The 290 is a beast for $400 but the cooler sucks and most likely the non-reference cards won't arrive until early december.
