Keyboard and mouse won't work after waking up from sleep mode

Hi, I'm encountering an issue where after waking my PC up from sleep mode, either my keyboard, mouse or both won't work. Unplugging and then plugging the device back in results in a error:

"USB device not recognized. The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it."

From what I can tell this happens randomly. At first I thought it might be a problem with Windows 8 but I tried installing a clean copy of Win 8 on another drive and the same issue happened there.

This problem coincides with some other abnormal boot and sleep mode issues. Lately putting my PC into sleep mode, then waking it back up will result in the PC powering up, then shutting down for about 5 seconds, turning back on, shutting back down for another 5 seconds, then going through a full boot into Windows instead of waking up from sleep mode. This too is random and sometimes everything will work normally.

My system specs are:

Asus P8P67 Pro
i5 2500k
GTX 560 Ti
Windows 8

Could this possibly be caused by a faulty motherboard?

Thanks for any help.

Have you tried updating the drivers for your keyboard and mouse?

I tried removing their drivers, tested it once that way to see if waking up from sleep mode would work this time but no luck there. Reinstalling the drivers didn't work either.
