Hi,

I am currently using the MSI 970A-G45 motherboard, with a AMD FX-4100 processor. This whole setup is roughly two years old. I am intending to upgrade my CPU whilst still retaining this motherboard. However, I have read about the heating/VRM issues on this board with newer Vishera AM3+ AMD processors that I am looking at. My question is, if I were to buy an FX8350 or 8320 (125w) CPU with no intention to overclock or purposely run burn-in tools (as per the warning on MSI's site), would I encounter any issues with normal usage? (such as games etc).

Also, if I were to pick the 95w FX-6300 would this be a safer bet? I would rather get the FX-83xx series of CPUs, if there is no issue between the 970A-G45 board and those CPUs with just gaming.

More info: (if required)
650w PSU
GTX560Ti
8GB RAM

Solution

The 6300 would have much less worrysome overheating problem on that motherboard. So I would not worry about it, as I would have with the 8320/8350.

There will be a mild bottleneck, but nothing crazy, since you are getting it on promotion, its worth while buy.

hi, i dont know about the heat issue for FX-8350 in 970. But i am running the same cpu and mobo. There shouldn't be any heat issue i think as long as you have good cooler.

But for your question, you should buy FX-6300 which is good for price. 8350 is too much price with relatively lower performance. But

But i say overclock you cpu to 4.2ghz and see the result first. Do you experience bottleneck/lag in games? Please let me know.

Its that SPECIFIC range from MSI with that problem. Not the whole 970 chipset.

Ignorance is bliss. :)

Thanks for the speedy replies guys! I have never OC'ed so I don't really know how to, and I generally would not want to overclock.

I am on a limited upgrade budget, and would like to upgrade my CPU and GPU. I understand this board had issues (such as in the thread Novuake linked) with the newer FX processors. The reason I'm asking is so I can save money towards getting a GPU like the GTX680 or 770 (both of which are having discounts in my area) --> instead, using the same money I could probably get a whole new CPU+mobo, but I wouldnt be able to get anything as grand as those cards, which I think would be a good deal to have now and transfer over to a new system in the future.

I don't have any specialised cooling equipment in my case besides the standard heatsinks and fans.

Thanks for the input!

I see, so to clarify, are you saying that the 6300 would not have any heating or other compatibility issues with my mobo given that I update the bios?

On a side note, would the FX6300 present any significant bottlenecking on a GTX680/770?

If it hasn't gone bad as of yet, you are likely in good shape ... I'd go with the FX-83xx for max benefit.

You could remove and 're-paste' the FET-sink if you think you have an issue...or you could purchase a specialized sink.

You could also purchase a 95w FX-8300 from SK for $200 or so.

We're all still waiting for the FX-8300 to make it to America retail ...

woww. sorry man, forget what I said. I didn't know they could have this particular problem with their mb model. It's kind of frustrating to have a newer chipset and still not being able to use a stock FX-8350.

Tell me about it. All of the 970 boards are nto ideal, but they work if they have good enough VRM and VRM cooling, the MSI one is just really bad.
