If you are talking wireless networking, it is available from your router wireless security configuration page. Just type your gateway router address into your browser and use the default user/password for your router. If you changed it, either use those of reset your router to clear the old information if you don't recall it.

You need to use a workgroup for a combined Windows 7 and XP network, homegroups are not supported on XP. HERE is additional information. All machines must use the same workgroup name, and the security and sharing settings on the Windows 7 machine must allow access -- the easiest way is to create a new user group called Everyone (with all the rights you want to give them) in the security tab of the drive or folder.

They are all on same workgroup I can see them in network option in all machines my laptop can see windows xp and browse files but my xp when connected to laptop can see it but needs a username and password. I want a username and password though for my windows 7 laptop so only I can access it on the network. Any ideas?

if you are meaning, network sharing (having the host share to hosts on the SAME network: \\hostname\destination folder\file)
check your main(host) that is wanting to share the file, "advance sharing settings" under netowrk connections (win7)
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings
roll down to the bottom, and "use password protection" should be off.
make sure, that you have the "folder" shared and have the security settings to allow "everyone" before-hand.
let me know...

I'm not sure what you mean but I just shared a folder on my windows 7 to my Windows xp not directly connected but through a router, my windows 7 can view windows xp files using a username and password set in the manage users on the windows xp machine. But the xp machine cannot access files without a password and username for windows 7 and im trying to figure out where i can go to change password and username on windows 7 for my xp machine to access it? With a password I don't want to turn it off.

You don't have to use a password -- BUT Windows 7 sharing is a two step process. First you must share under the sharing tab. Then you must ALSO allow the user under the security tab. The easiest way to share on your LAN is to add a new share group named Everyone. To do this right click and select properties, security tab on the folder or drive that you have already shared on Windows 7 and click the Edit button, click Add, type Everyone in the object name box, click OK, highlight the Everyone group in the group window list and set their permissions appropriately. Click OK. Click Apply and OK. Then you will have sharing for all users on your network without a password for that drive or folder.

You can also set a username in security and a password if you wish using the same path.

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings

copy and paste this to your root explorer, like how you would type network address on ur IE/CHROME/ETC.

then check on the very bottom to have "password protection" turned off. save, exit.

make sure you share the folder, allow "EVERYONE" to access the folder on the security tab,

after you share folder like you said, on the properties windows, find the security tab. there, on the first window, if you do not see "everyone" you must add it.
to do this
1. click "edit" tab
2. click "add" tab on the new window
3. click "advanced" on the bottom
4. click "find now" on the right middle section
5. when the bottom window pops with a list of names
6. find "EVERYONE" double click the name
7. click "ok" and you are back to the original folder properties window.
8. From there, which you should now see "everyone" added, you can set to read only / full control and etc.
9. Click "ok"
Now get your XP comp that is within the same LAN,
find the windows 7 computer on the "My networks"
---If you removed the password and shared correctly, you will see the folder in which you shared and gave security to in the windows 7 pc (my networks), and password will not be asked.

wait scratch that change your password it only applies if ya wanna connect to your homegroup, but knowin that you can already share you dont need it. ya just need to create a password and username (if ya dont have one yet) for your pc user account and use that (for the username its impossible if ye dont have 1 made yet)......should be simple right?
