is it possible to cahnge a transistor on a IBM board?

I got this IBM laptop which at time the screen do come on and at a certain time the screen just went of and nothing appear on the screen is just blank. I took it to the retailer and he troubleshoot and said that is the transistor. What I want to know if it is possible to change it?

Yes, but I highly doubt you can do it yourself. It would involve soldering.
