I got this PC from my brother since he was not using it. He told me however that the PC cannot start. So, I plugged in everything and it does start, but only for 1-3 seconds. I can hear the fans starting up and then the PC just dies.

So what I've tried so far is:
Inserted my own graphics card and started the PC. Did exactly the same.
Inserted my own power supply (also 600w) and started the PC. Did exactly the same.
Inserted the his graphics card into my current PC and its working fine.

His specs:
CPU:Intel Core i5 2500k
Motherboard: MSI H55-GD65 motherboard
Graphics card: MSI 6850 Cyclone
RAM: Apacer 2x2gb ddr3-1333 PC3-10600 cl9 ram
PSU: 600w EZCool

So, what is my next step? Buy a new power supply?

Thanks in advance!

Solution
The brand of your PSU is EZCool? Never even heard of it.

See this for PSU brand tiers, its not even on the list.. http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/323050.aspx

My suggestion:
- Put the EZCool aside, don't use it. I couldn't find reviews or even a place to buy it. Don't trust it, don't use it, it could kill your other components. May already have... *touch wood* But it just sounds like insufficient power to me.
- Buy a Corsair, Seasonic, XFX, Antec

I bought this PSU a while ago as a backup PSU, but my friend told me that it's really bad. Like I said, I did insert my own PSU (Gigabyte Odin 585W) and it did the same.

edit: Thanks for the link. I don't mind buying another PSU, since I'm only fixing his PC and keeping it for a bit. I figured that since I inserted my own PSU into the PC and it still did the same, that the PSU is not the problem.

[strike]what was the other psu brand used?[/strike] sorry you already answered. But by chance both could be of odd sorts, but doubt it.

Try one with either memory stick

If unable to diagnose next step would be to disassemble and start again. Take out the cpu, remove the motherboard etc.

Check there's enough plastic/brass standoffs the motherboard sits on as well.

Ok taking out 1 stick and starting up. Will take out CPU and start if this does not work.

Ok. So I removed one of the RAM sticks and powered the PC and it's staying powered up, however I see a black screen while the monitor is blinking. I plugged in my second monitor and it did the same. I also tried the other graphics card and still doing the same.

So What now?

its looking to be a memory problem at this point.

Do you know how to clear cmos by removing the battery?

clear cmos and try again, this time with the memory in the black slots, dimms 1 and 3. If two sticks isn't working, try singly.

from the manual:

Important
DDR3 memory modules are not interchangeable with DDR2 and the DDR3 standard
is not backwards compatible. You should always install DDR3 memory modules in
the DDR3 DIMM slots.
In Dual-Channel mode, make sure that you install memory modules of the same type
and density in different channel DIMM slots.
To enable successful system boot-up (Lynnfield CPU especially), always insert the
memory modules into the DIMM1 first.

Due to the chipset resource deployment, the system density will only be detected up
to 15+GB (not full 16GB) when each DIMM is installed with a 4GB memory module.

Dimm order goes as follows from cpu side > 2,1,4,3.

So I take it he bought the wrong mobo? The weird thing is he used the PC for about 3 months and everything worked fine.

So, can the problem be the different sockets? If yes, any advice on affordable quality mobos on the market?

that is crazy, I just cant believe it.

Some mid range and relative cheap options, ASROCK is best option

1- AsRock z77 extreme 4
2- ASUS Z77 V LK
3- MSI Z77 g43 gaming

Can you list more just a little cheaper? I can't get AsRock or MSI from my friend who can give me a big discount on some items. My friend told me he can only get Asus, Gigabyte and Intel motherboards.

Thanks for the effort man. Really appreciate it!

Asrock Z77 Pro 3
Asus P8Z77 M
Gigabyte Z77MX D3H

A B75 based chipset mobo would be another option, but mising a lot of features from a i5 2500K CPU
