Is this meant to be the case? I've heard people say that the XFX 650W PRO Core Edition was meant to be really quiet, which is why I bought it - it is by far the most noisy part of my system under load - I thought it was GPU first, but I turned the fan speed down by a lot and there was no difference, I used the fan controller to turn down my system fans - still no difference.

I assumed it was the PSU, put my ear next to it and it was making a whole lot of noise, exhausting hot heat from the back, is it meant to be this loud? It's quiet but not silent idle.

At around 70% load, the XFX 650W PRO Series Core Edition becomes audible.

What is the system configuration that you're powering?

R9 280x Vapour X at 1070MHZ core clock, 1175 VDDC
I5 4670k at 3.4 Ghz
1 7200 RPM HD
1 SSD
4 140mm Fans at 7V

My total wattage I've calculated to be about 480W on a PSU calculator, so 650W is well above what I need.

I'm also worried about shipping if I have to RMA it...

Can a power cable that you connect to the wall be a problem? It's a really old standard power cable.

I've read that XFX RMA centre is in Preston, Lancashire in the UK? That's great then! I hope it is, I can't find it anywhere!

Your system power draw should be under 400 Watts which would put it under 60% of the PSU's capacity.

You should be using the power cable that came with the PSU. In some cases the wire gauge is heavier than for the power cable that is used for a monitor for example.

I don't know where the UK RMA service centre is located. You need to register online at XFX's website and request an RMA before they will provide the specific shipping address.

So are you saying I should return my PSU? The power cable that came with my PSU has a European plug, which is incompatible with UK mains.

If the PSU is louder than normal then you should get an RMA.

Your PSU power cable should preferably be using the same or better wire gauge than the European cable.

The problem is I'm not sure what constitutes as normal as this is my first PSU, I would assume it's not normal as it is by far the loudest part of my computer, I can easily turn down all components and still hear it going.

Would an older wire really make a difference to the noise under load though? I'm using it right now.

I've used XFX Pro Series Core Edition PSUs and they are essentially inaudible when drawing below 70% of the PSU's full load capacity.

Wire gauge does not play a part in fan noise.

This is quite annoying then, as I am a good half a meter away from my computer and it seems like a hair dryer on low, it generates a lot of heat too. Definitely thinking of RMA now, my gaming experience would be so quiet otherwise, I thought it was my GPU all this time but it's almost silent.

It definitely should not be that loud.

Is it generating a lot of heat when the system is idling? If it is, then that's not normal either.

On idle I can't hear it and not much heat is generated, but when I run a game for 10 minutes, the noise really loud, and I'm sure it's coming from there.

Running Unigine Heaven Benchmark, put ear next to back exhaust - almost silent, front fans - almost silent, bottom of case near PSU exhaust - the noise that's coming from the PC.

That PSU's fan is an intake fan. It should be drawing in cool air from outside of the computer case and exhausting it out the PSU's vent holes. If that's where all of the noise is coming from then RMA it.

Yes, sorry, the intake fan is the one with the dust filter, I mean the exhaust without filters. I've registered my product and will RMA.

Really frustrating that I've already had to RMA some RAM, now a PSU, all from my first build.
