Get atleast 8GB of RAM(ofcourse if your MB supports).

Ex Drive are not reliable, they could fail anytime out of nowhere, this goes for disadvantage. Rest of all you can think off are advantages.

Buying an external HDD will not help your problem at all.
You need to either get a genuine copy of Windows, or install Linux.

I would say get a Desktop instead. And if you are a pro video editor than get 12GB or 16GB of RAM of (1600 or 1866MHz).
A 2TB HDD will be helpful of 7200RPM. Intel 3770K would be a good CPU for you.
And go with internal drives for backup also, they are reliable.
If you buy Windows OS, go for Win 7 64bit Ultimate.

linux is mostly free though there are paid versions that come with support. You might be interested in reading this page: http://www.linux.com/news/software/applications/693365-...

The adv of an external drive is they are portable.
The disadv is that they can be dropped thus destroying the data on them.

No matter, you should ALWAYS have backups of important data and never trust a single drive or device to hold your only copy of it.

Ok, I can understand your situation, so what is your current setup ? And how much you are willing to pay for future setup ? If you have a budget in mind then shoot it, it will be helpful for us to give you further suggestion.
