I have a home media server with 11 tb of storage currently but i'm starting to run out of room. unfortunately I'm also out of hdd bays and sata ports. I was wondering if this solution would work and also any other solutions you might recommend. My thought was to get a second case, power supply pci-e sata port card and one of those extension thingies I think they are called risers or something. put my new hdds in the new case and plug them into the power supply, and pci card which connects with the cable to the server. will this work and what better alternatives are there?

It sounds like your needs put you into the next class of hardware.
You're moving from home to small business to me or will be soon.
If you have empty 5.25" bays you can use something like these to mount a few more drives provided you have the sata ports...

(bigger list here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=hard+drive+cage&N=-1&isNodeId=1 )

But I suspect it wont be long before your looking to get a server chassis with 16 or 24 drive bays.

really am wanting all my media to be available to my network at all times. am also considering just putting up a second server but would like them all reachable by the same shares on the same ip. so was trying to figure out how to connect more drives concurrently with what is their now. the sata card was the option i was primarily considering here but need to store them in a second case as I'm out of bays in this one so was wondering if it would work with an extension to keep the pci card connected to the server but inside the new case with the hdds so it will only have one cord running between the cases
