yes, they have to be both SL72Y'S, AND IV'E SWAP THEM AND THE COM. WILL BOOT UP EACH SEPARATE,IV'E ADDED 4 MORE GIGS OF RAM? it startes up, and you can feel the heat sink getting warm, but nothing to the momitor, or boot screen. could i have to change something in setup with one chip running?but the machine, from the factory should recognize the second chip auto. pulling my hair out!!!!!

According to ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/systems/support/system_x_pdf/71p7639.pdf, nothing special is required (no additional VRM is emntioned). Is the Microprocessor 2 error LED lit? Does the system beep when 2 processors are installed?

What's the BIOS version? According to http://www-947.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-45279 1.51 is the latest.

A defective motherboard could also be a possibility.

yes i have the latest bios, but oddly enough, i switch the chips ,from chip 1 to 0, and chip 0 to 1, and it fired right up. i can't explain it, the computer runs great. it reconizes both chips, and when i enabled HT, contrary to most peoples beliefs the SL72Y is hyper threading. devise manager shows 4 processors. THANKS AGIAN FOR YOUR TIME, MAYBE YOU HAVE SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED?

Hi again It's a IBM ITELLISTATION Z PRO, with two SL72Y's, HT's, it got 6 gigs of ram, a nivdia geforce 7800 gts/256, and running win XP PRO on one hard drive, and win vista home on the other, the computer runs great, and is fast,i just built it as a project for under 150.00 dollars, and i'm giving it to my son, for his room. replacing a dell gx270 p4 3.4/1m/800, with 2gigs of ram, that stop working do to a mother board problem....he loves the z pro, and hopefully it will last a few more years, it was built in 2006,but runs GREAT Thanks for the helpful answers,to all
