i just got a dell p2714hc. everything is nice except it's most basic function.
the color (or color temperature)changes from warm > cool, starting subtly at 1/3 of the right to the right edge where it is most noticeable. this is most noticeable and obvious on a white background. i've gone through TWO monitors purchased from amazon. both have the same characteristic, using vga or dvi-d, on two different computers with two different graphic cards(nvidia 7200/7300, 8600 gt).

i even went down to bestbuy to take a look at their demos, and while with some variances between them all, they were all nonetheless consistent in displaying color across their screens. so i've come to the conclusion that dell is putting out a dud. so now i'm looking at other monitors and a little gun shy at that.

as i understand it, dell hires out to any number of companies that do monitors. is there any way i can find out who makes the p2714hc model?

who makes asus monitors(as i am looking at their 27")?

Solution
Dell monitors are made by whatever random company accepts the contract at the time. The ppl who believe Dell monitors are super reliable and last a long time bought one while they were being made by Samsung, LG or BENQ. Those that complain got stuck with AU Optronics, or some even lesser-known names. Dell actually doesn't make anything at all. Not even the clumps of green plastic they call 'air ducts'. There used to be an easy way to check who actually made any specific Dell monitor, but now they make me log in with a product code, and since lolDell, i don't have one :/

Asus monitors are made by Chi Mei, Samsung, Au Optronics, Hitachi-Matsushita, Mitsubishi or Sharp. Like Dell, it's luck of the draw. Unlike Dell, Asus actually...

In short, if you want to know for certain you're getting a great monitor, buy a Samsung, BENQ or LG.

do monitors require a "burn in time" like headphones? i'm thinking i should run the monitor for a few days.

They shouldn't. Headphones require it because they contain speakers. All speakers require a burn-in time (including home and car speakers). The purpose is to loosen up the cones to make them more agile and can then reproduce sound more efficiently.

I personally only use Samsung monitors (Apple also uses Samsung screens (mainly) for their iGadgets, who, like Dell, also make absolutely nothing). You have issues with Samsung though, and that's ok :) I have issues with LG, but they do make quality stuff. BENQ is hard for me to find locally, and a monitor is something i'd prefer not to get in the mail.

john,,,thx for your time. let me update. i have now gone through THREE, yes 3, dell p2714h model from amazon. i am very fortunate that amazon accepts returns without question. the first two had the same problem of a fluctuating "flare". the 3rd was didn't have a fluctuating flare but half was warm and half was true. moreover i couldn't access controls because the screen was LOCKED. chatted with dell, they took too long so i ended the chat. came back 3hrs later,,,still locked. tried everything. then the monitor went dead,,,as in no power dead. that's it, man 3 strikes and i'm outta here.

btw taking your advice about who manufactures the led panels i came across this GREAT SITE FOR MONITORS. in the "panel search link" you can type in a brand and it lists all the manufacturers of a given model. the dell p2714h is a samsung Samsung AD-PLS (LTM270HL02) panel...

here's the site link http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/

lol damn :/ not really sure what to say to that except even BMW's have issues sometimes :p Still, LG and BENQ are great choices as well. You could even go with a cheaper monitor like ViewSonic or something if you want something that'll last long enough for the higher res monitors to come down in price.

well, in the past, my normal purchasing choice has always been refurbs except hd's and graphic cards. but ALL my laptop, desktop, and monitor purchases have been refurb, with the thought that factory machines are assembled by monkeys and refurbs are checked by tech support.

well with these monitors i mysteriously went against norm and purchased these monitors are brand new. that'll teach me! i'm going back to my old ways - refurbs from now on. a friend and i were talking about these issues and we came to the conclusion that quality control today is left to the buyer especially with monitors because no one cares as long as they can play their games or watch video. 4 yrs ago my wife's dell 2709 cost $800, today i see mostly <$400 27" monitors. i guess you get what you pay for.

much as i like dell monitors, i'm going to try an asus 27", panel made by lg display, ah-ips. one last chance. after this,,,,refurb is the way to go
