Hello All! I need help in understanding what exactly a processor does. I know its a common question but the thing I dont know about are the modern processors e.g. i3, i5, i7 (1st, 2nd, 3rd generation).

My questions are:
1)What is the difference between 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th gen in these processors?

2)What are these "Threads" in these processors? What is their jobs?

3)A kid in my class always says if a processor has 3.0 GHz speed (just example) and there are 4 cores in it and 4 threads too, it will be considered as "3.0x8" = "24.0 GHz" which sounds completely wrong. Could someone explain to me about this? Thanks :)

a processor is refereed as a cpu central processing unit.
its job is to complete task which are given to it by the user.
1)they have improvements in the architecture.and more transistors between each generation.the 4gen from the 3gen they have over twice the performance in graphics.and enhanced over clocking features.
2)the threads are like a road if you have one lane one direction only one car can pass at a time if you had 2 lanes one direction more cars could pass at a time.
in a cpu the cars = data.that go in the cpu for them to be prepossessed and give you a solution.
hyper threading gives an improvement in hyper treading applications.
3)your kid in you class is a dumb fuck.
until today one core is assigned to one task. lets say you have a browser open and word your browser would be working on one core and word on a other.because it is more complex than this stick to this for now.
the cores do not multiply your clock speed.or the threads.
the clock speed is like a pace where the data in the cpu is processed.3.0 ghz it means it can make up to 3000000000 tasks per second.there is more in to the clock speed than this but lets keep ti here for now.
