Hey guys.

I'm building my first gaming PC and I want it to be able to play future games in 1080p with max settings, so I was told to go for the GTX 780 with a 1080p, 144hz monitor.

But what card would be better?

I was going to get the R9 290x but it sounds like a jet taking off and I don't think I could put up with that.
Thanks for any help.

Hi Greg,

I am in the exact same position with my new build. But i am going to hang around until ASUS, MSI get hold of the R9 290x to make it cooler and quieter. We should hear more about this in the next couple weeks.

From your choices and in what I have read 2 cooler fans = quieter, if sound is a major concern. If the R9 still sounds like a jumbo jet after reconfiguration, I will going with the Gigabyte Nvidia GTX 780 OC 3GB Windforce.

Yeah, it would probably be better to wait, I can't get a card for 2 or 3 months anyway, I don't have the room to set it all up yet anyway.

EVGA Cards are some of the best. I can vouch for the 780 SC w/ACX as being reliable, and can run most everything on max settings. Also the aftermarket fans R9 290 didn't solve any of the cooling issues.

That 780 Ti Superclock from EVGA were absolute beast. From the review done by TPU the card was able to rival the average perfirmance of dual card like 690 (and the card still can be OCed further). The ACX cooler really did a good job maintaining the temperature below 80 which really help the card to maintain the maximum boost frequency even after being overclocked by 15% from the initial clock of the card (the card already overclocked 15% out if the box from EVGA)

To be fair that article was written on the 7th of November and also addressed a driver issue where R9 290X was operating at different fan speeds leading to inconsistency. I believe this issue has been patched.

Aftermarket cards (MSI / ASUS) haven't come out yet for the R9 290x to the best of my knowledge. These are expected to be around late November or probably mid December before Xmas. As you have a couple months to burn, I would wait and see what this cards looks like and what the reviews say. Keep in mind the Aftermarket R9 290x cards could also force another price drop on Nvidia's 780 series along with the 8 series coming out early next year - possibly making the 780 a very good buy in a months time.

IF the aftermarket R9 is still noisy I will probably go with Mciahel's EVGA Nvidia GeForce GTX780 Superclocked ACX Cooler 3GB GDDR5.

I don't why amd did not allow for their partners to work with the card earlier so they can come out with custom cooler card faster. (well i speculate amd might want to keep info regarding hawaii from leaking too much before launch so they only give reference card for partners to sell on early batch). W1zz from TPU did ask board partners about 290s custom cooler but it seems board partner also dont have ETA for custom cooled 290s but several of them are ready to roll out 780 Ti with their own cooling solution. Anyway custom cooled 290s card might perform a lot better than reference 290s out there but even with the same price with reference 290s i don't think it will trigger another price drop on nvidia side. at least not on the same way when they drop 780 from 650 to 500
