Assuming windows 7. Click start and right click computer then click properties. Look down a bit under system, system type will say what bit OS you have. 32bit systems will only support up to 4GB of RAM (this includes and RAM on your GPU), you will need to upgrade your OS to 64bit to support more ram. As a note, if for eg you are running win7 home 32 bit then you can upgrade to win7 home 64bit for free using the existing windows serial key (you will have to reinstall your OS to upgrade and you will need the 64bit installation dvd). If its a 64bit system then let us know and we will help further.

32 bit versions of Windows are limited to 4GIB of physical memory (this includes memory-mapped IO which graphics cards love to gobble up) for marketing reasons. 32 bit versions of Windows Server and 64 bit versions of Windows do not have this limitation.
